Ever tried explaining Twitter to someone that’s never used it? It’s not easy, and Twitter’s homepage isn’t especially helpful, as most non-users I talk to about it seem to respond with “why would anyone care what I’m doing?”Twitter is now moving fast to address this problem. Last night, they launched “Twitter 101 for Business,” a getting started guide that discusses the very basics of Twitter in an especially thorough way. Next week, the company will go a step further, revamping its homepage to try and get new users started off on the right foot.
According to AllThingsD, the new homepage will feature more of what’s actually happening on Twitter – like trending topics – as well as funnel users towards useful information about the service, like the 101 guide. Twitter search – which in its own right took a long time to become a part of Twitter’s web interface – will also find a spot on the homepage.
Frankly, Twitter’s probably missed out on thousands if not millions of potential users by not making its homepage more interesting. With an estimated $48 million worth of exposure in the media each month, its homepage is undoubtedly being hit by the likes of Larry King, Oprah, and Ellen viewers, many of who probably have that same thought: “why would anyone care what I’m doing?” Next week, we’ll see how Twitter tries to address it.

Twitter is quickly gaining steam in the social networking world as many people and businesses, big and small, are discovering how this tool can help them grow and succeed. Thanks to tools like Twitter, the world is getting smaller and we are now able to read how our favorite celebrities, politicians and top executives are occupying their time on a day to day basis. In fact, the site has been referred to as the “water cooler of the 21st century” many times over.
While Twitter is gaining popularity with many, there are some groups who still wonder if the site is just a waste of time. Well, as a Social Media Marketing Specialist, I can tell you that Twitter is absolutely a fantastic tool for entrepreneurs and businesses. The possibilities with this site are endless, especially when it comes to building a valuable contact list, establishing a professional web presence and getting in front of people you may not have otherwise been able to connect with.
In order to help you understand how it can help your business grow and succeed, I have compiled a list of four ways Twitter can help your business succeed:
Twitter is a micro-blogging application that allows you to be “short and sweet” with your words. You don’t have to be a woman or man of many words to get your point across here, because Twitter only allows you to communicate in 140 character posts per tweet. This short length may sound like it’s too little to help you get your words out, but honestly it is just perfect. After all, who wants to say too much when saying just enough is usually the secret to ultimate success anyway.
Still worried about making Twitter work for you? The following are a few Twitter tips to making Twitter a success for you!
#1 Interact and Communicate – Twitter, after all, is a form of social media, so it should go without saying that you should be social.
#2 Stay Active – Going weeks without twittering will get you nowhere. In order to make the most of Twitter, you have to be involved.
#3 Use Qwitter.com – You’ll know who has quit following you and if you want to do the same. Find more info here.
#4 Use Twitter Tools – Some examples are Tweetdeck, Tweetlater, Twhirl or Twitter Fox; just try them until you find something that you like and that works best for you. Read More→
