When Cancer Becomes Personal, So Does the Quest to Find Treatment

After losing loved ones to cancer, a husband and wife entrepreneurial team decided to take active part in search for the cure.

Brampton, Ontario, Canada, February 3, 2008 – For Serena and Steven Carcasole cancer is more than just a word. In less than a year, it took away several of their family members and left others grappling for life. The Carcasole’s committed to help fight the devastating decease by donating part of their business sales to cancer research.

Over 130,000 people are diagnosed with cancer each year in Canada alone. The magnitude of this statistics makes it hard to comprehend the amount of suffering cancer patients and their families go through. Yet for the Carcasole’s this number was given not one, not two, but three faces, as members of their closest family received the dreaded diagnosis.

The harrowing experience gave the Carcasole’s resolve to help find a cure for this devastating illness. But neither the husband nor the wife were medical professionals or research scientists. In fact, with Serena Carcasole specializing in business outsourcing and consulting services, and Steven Carcasole running a successful home inspection business, the couple seemed to be an unlikely contributor to the search for the effective cancer treatment.

This did not stop the Carcasole’s, who decided to donate portions of their businesses’ incomes to the Canadian Cancer Society. Serena donates 1% of her business sales while Steven contributes $5 from each home inspection he completes.

Their commitment is especially important as it comes at a time when charitable contributions are expected to drop due to the economic turmoil.  The Carcasole’s acknowledge that they are worried about the impact of the latest economic changes on their companies’ bottom lines. Yet they understand that even a small contribution can be a life-saver. In fact, the couple agrees that the answer to remaining competitive in tough economy does not lie in cutting down on charity, but rather in attracting more clients and serving the existing ones better.
